Clark Matis, Randy Merrell and John Schweizer founded Merrell in 1981. The trio set out to create hiking boots that were not only durable, functional and comfortable, but also affordable. Merrell contributed the boot-making know-how, while Matis, a former collegiate all-American and Olympic cross-country skier, provided production management and marketing experience. Schweizer brought his business chops to the team. The company produced its very first boot, made in Italy, in 1983. A mere five years after its founding, the company had sold more than 25,000 pairs of boots. Merrell began selling clothing and accessories in 2007, and in 2010, it sold nearly $500 million worth of products. The company, headquartered in Rockford, Michigan, sells products in more than 150 countries and has more than 100 stores around the globe.
