When sisters and Havenly.com co-founders Emily Motayed and Lee Mayer were working as business consultants, their busy lives left them little time for decorating their living spaces — and they quickly discovered the price of hiring an interior designer was prohibitive. Although the pair consulted each other about design ideas, they saw the advantage of having a more organized and manageable format. With newly married Mayer relocating to Denver and Motayed trying to navigate a workable design for her New York apartment, they realized many people likely shared their need for an affordable design service. The idea for a reasonably priced online digital interior design consulting business was born.


Although the sisters had no experience in interior design, as consumers they had personal knowledge of what the business should offer. Armed with their business idea and two MBAs — Mayer graduated from Harvard and Motayed from Wharton — they began researching the mass market to assess the viability of such a company. That was 2013, and Havenly.com now offers two affordable design plans and more than 200 freelance designers.
